Contested History: Sex Ed in New Orleans from 1970 to Present
The exhibit “Contested History: Sex Ed in New Orleans from 1970 to Present” centers around the experiences of sexual education advocates and their programs for New Orleans youth from the district’s pilot program in 1980 to the present. Although Louisiana has never required sex ed in public schools, educators, local organizations, and even the Orleans School Board, have pushed the state for comprehensive sex education over the years. Materials presented here from the are Newcomb Archives and Vorhoff Collection’s Planned Parenthood Collection Records, the Orleans Parish School Board Records, and five oral history interviews. The voices of those who taught and created sex ed programming narrate their efforts to transform New Orleans into a safer and healthier place for young people across the city.
