Becoming the Latin American Library

A Distinctive Trajectory: Reshaping Histories at The Latin American Library

This part of the exhibition focuses on the ways in which the library has forged continuities with the initial collecting focus of Indigenous and early modern printed works and manuscripts and the geographical concentration on Mesoamerica. When the Latin American Library as such was established in the 1960s, the scope was expanded to include all countries in the region, including the Caribbean, and encompassed other disciplinary approaches such as literature, modern arts, politics, and cultural studies. Since the 1970s, the Latin American Library also has included a photographic archive.
