Louisiana Women’s Collection: A History of Political Activism



While the League of Women Voters holds a unique place in Louisiana’s history of suffrage and women’s political activism, women of the state were not limited to working in this one organization. Exhibited here are a few other female-led political groups that advocated on a wide array of issues, from education to political transparency.

Some Women’s groups address subjects that may not initially appear political, but become some upon considering its historical context. For example, an integrated organization of Christian women and reproductive health advocacy groups. Many Louisiana women have gone on to achieve political careers. This demonstrates the evolution of women from political outsiders to participants in the larger political process in Louisiana and federal government.
