Section 1

Maya Syncretism

Exhibit Sections

The creation of shrines and altars represented a link between the religions of 16th Century Spaniards and Maya. Both groups understood and encouraged the concept of presenting offerings at a place dedicated to a higher power. As such, it is no surprise that shrines and altars are a persistent image of Maya syncretism, as indigenous groups brought together Christian and Maya imagery into their shrines and altars.
