Louisiana Politics

The Treasures of Tulane

Anyone who has studied political history knows that Louisiana has a distinct and often colorful political background. Our leaders have been larger than life, vastly influential, and often controversial. Perhaps the most significant collection of Louisiana political history can be found in the David R. McGuire memorial collection. David R. McGuire (1910-1960) was secretary to Representative Hale Boggs and Director of Public Relations to New Orleans Mayor deLesseps S. Morrison. His son, Jack B. McGuire, was an aide to New Orleans Mayor Victor Schiro and three years later became his public relations director from 1967 to 1970. In addition, Jack McGuire is an avid collector of Louisiana political materials. Jack McGuire’s generous contributions to LaRC include a papers and artifacts of the late Governor Huey P. Long, an extensive collection of New Orleans Mayor Victor Schiro’s papers, as well as a great deal of political ephemera. This section includes some highlights from his collection of Huey Long papers, as well as items from the Hale and Lindy Boggs Collection. Hale Boggs served as House Majority Leader and House Majority Whip in the early 1970s. After his disappearance in an Alaskan plane crash, his wife, Lindy Boggs, took over his seat and became the first woman elected to Congress from Louisiana.
