Making the King Cake

Private: From Galette des Rois to King Cake: Exploring a shared culinary heritage

An oval shaped cake, the King Cake is traditionally baked to honor the three kings with butter, cinnamon, raisins, and sugar colored frosting Once taken out of the oven, a small plastic baby figurine is placed inside of the cake. In addition to adding to the enjoyment and surprise of the King Cake, the baby represents Jesus and is meant to symbolize his birth and the helpful gifts he received from the Three Kings. Those partaking in the consumption of the King Cake find themselves searching for the baby as the Three Kings did themselves. ~ Margot Corper
