Carli, member of a minor provincial noble family, stoutly defended the old hierarchical social order. In this extensive work, he reviewed a number of indigenous societies of South America. He concluded that they bore a relationship with Mediterranean societies, which he postulated as deriving from Atlantis. He particularly admired Peru, where a top-down order was strongly imposed by the upper social echelon.
